Laser Cutting Experience

The Laser Cutting Experience
This project I had somewhat more confidence in. Mainly because I wouldn't have to use 3d software and I was a little bit acquainted with illustrator.
The Mood Board:
Classmate Inspiration
I already had my idea in advance when starting the project. This mainly comes from the student examples. When I first saw what the other students did, I was inspired. These were the specific creations that I particularly liked.

Glue
I ended up using a hot glue gun as my final glue. I was originally gonna use the provided glue from the first two assignments but ended up using a hot glue gun due to convenience.
The First Iteration of the Lamp
A problem I encountered with this design is that despite the flat space at the bottom of the legs, they didn't go on great. While the circle worked, the bottom piece did not.

Another problem was this looked a bit too much like the inspirations. This was until I FLIPPED it.
The First Iteration of the Lamp REVISED
It turns out that the squiggle that I made as a decoration that I thought looked cool, ended up actually turning into a good support for the lamp.
This ended up changing the way the lamp was going to be designed
This made me abandon my original plan and go for the upside-down lamp. This not only made the design look less like the ones I based it on, but it also made it look better.
Before laser cutting, I ended up changing my design as a sort of a last-minute thing

The Creation Process
Phase 2 Iteration
Feedback time!
Jed: He said to make the overall lamp smaller. There would be too much-exposed light so allowing the lamp to be smaller would make the legs much better in not letting too much light out.

Mia: Called it an octopus. Made a suggestion about making the lengths of the legs different sizes in order to make it look more like an octopus.

Clara: Also called it an octopus. Gave the idea that it maybe can have octopus-like decorations on the legs. Like suction holes and a pair of eyes.
Ideas drawn by Clara
I went with the idea of adding suctions to the legs as decoration. I ended up really liking the idea so I decided to go with it.
Used the snipping tool to make the semi-circle shapes on the tentacle.

Closing thoughts
The project was probably the most fun out of all of them. I managed to create a final product that I was quite happy with compared to my others from the other two projects. This mainly comes with the fact that I had a good amount of feedback and was able to create multiple iterations of my lamp.

There are, however, many things I could have worked better. This includes the lights for the lamp. The overall lamp should have been reduced in size to efficiently hide the Led in the middle and the wires that come with it.

I could have also added actual holes in the tentacles to have a better-looking shadow instead of the bars from the tentacles.

I could of also changed the size of some of the tentacles as suggested by Mia to give the octopus a more natural look.

But these are all what-ifs that didn't happen. The final creation is what it is.
